St. Ferdinand College, a Catholic educational institution, was founded on September 28, 1950 by Msgr. Ricardo A. Jamias and Judge Manuel Arranz who were members of the Knight of Columbus IIagan Center, now Council 3705, Dr. Jose Valdez and Msgr. Alejandro Olalia. The Articles of incorporation was signed on December 21, 1950.
It started its formal operation in the year 1951-1952 with Kindergarten, Liberal Arts and Elementary Education programs. The Congregation of Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (CFIC now SFIC) took over the reins of the College from 1952 to 1975. After 1975, lay administrators took over.
The coming of the Franciscan Sisters gave an impetus to its enrollment and from then on there was a yearly increase of population in all the three departments. The major turning points of the College came as the result of the opening of the new course in education - the BSEEd. There was then a great demand of the graduates finishing this course.
The majority of the public school teachers were only ETC graduates. These undergraduates rushed to SFC to enroll which greatly increased the student population particularly in the College department.
During the year 1962, the ROTC unit was activated which added more attraction to male students. A separate ROTC and Armory building was immediately constructed for that purpose.
In the succeeding years, new major fields of learning were opened: Accounting, Banking and Finance, Management in Commerce and English, Mathematics, History Science and Filipino under the Education Program. These led to the establishment of a separate College of Commerce and Secretarial and the College of Arts and Sciences.
The graduate course was opened in 1965 (the first throughout the valley) with Master of Arts in Education (MAEd) as its initial 2 SFC Student Handbook-College Edition Program. This was followed by the opening of Master in Business Administration (MBA) in 1979. This led to the expansion of the Library with the purchase of hundreds of volumes of books to meet the DECS requirements and this added again to the increase of enrollment.
In 1992, SFC formally opened the Bachelor of Science in Nursing and the Two-Year Medical Secretarial course.
Orientation of the secretarial courses was redirected and Two-Year Computer Secretarial Course was offered in the same year. BS in Commerce was likewise aligned to answer the needs of computerization and information technology. Hence, the opening of the BSC major in Computer Science, also in 1992.
In 1993, a great boom of curricular offerings came about in the Graduate School. The college offered Master in Public Administration (MPA) to answer the needs of professionals in government service. Together with this, was the offering of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.) as an answer to the clamor of our Masteral graduates. All of the school graduate and post¬graduate offerings are now fully recognized by the government.
The college expanded its curricular offering with the opening of the BS Criminology course in 1994 which graduated its first batch last March 1998. The BS Biology and BS Nutrition and Dietetics were offered in 1996.
The middle part of the 90s was focused on the improvement of infrastructure which gave rise to the construction of a 4-storey high school and elementary building. The annex to the Lourdes Building was also completed and the Paramedics Building was completely renovated to house the Nursing and Midwifery Programs.
To meet the needs of the information age, the school applied for the offering of BS Information Technology Courses. The permit was granted in time for SY 1999-2000 for BS in Computer Science, BS in Information Technology and BS in Information Management.
