College of Information Technology

In the context of globalization, the College of Information Technology offers Quality Catholic Education to develop professionals in the field of IT, responsible and competent in the use and development of IT to enable people to access heritage of knowledge for progressive, social and ecological transformation.

History

The existence of the College of Information Technology (CIT) is a result of Saint Ferdinand College re-alignment program in the field of Information Technology Education (ITE). Cognizant to the fact that IT curricular offering should suit the needs of the community and industry today, SFC then made its first intention to offer new IT programs in 1997. Unfortunately, the offering was not permitted by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) because the application was covered by then existing Ban on offering new courses for all schools nationwide.

With SFC’s persistence in the pursuit of total quality education IT education, the school then re-applied for the offering of the new IT programs in 1999. After undergoing a rigorous inspection from CHED, it was only during the last hour of the school year 1998-1999 that the permit was granted. The permit to offer three (3) new IT programs namely Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT), Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS), and Bachelor of Science in Information Management (BSIM) were then granted for its peration in the school year 1999-2000.

With the approval of the new IT program offerings, SFC was required by the CHED to create a new Department that would manage the three new IT programs. Thus, the College of Information Technology was then established in May 1999 and followed by the appointment of its 1st Dean – Mr. Rey S. Tuddao in the same month. With the advent of the CIT, Computer Science Instructor in the College of Commerce was pulled out to form the CIT Faculty line-up. Notwithstanding the fact that SFC did not much time to advertise its new IT courses, the CIT 1st year of operation registered a total of 103 enrollees. There are 62 enrollees for BSCS, 27 for BSIT and 14 for BSIM.

Congruent to SFC’s offering of the new IT programs, the CHED Regional Office 2 has issued a directive that all Higher Education Institution (HEI) offering IT related programs must conform to the updated policies and standards on ITE where IT programs should be called BSIT, BSIM and BSCS, and that it should be under the supervision of the new CIT. In response to this directive incoming 1st year enrollees of the then existing BSC major in Computer Science were all directed to take any of the CIT programs and thereby closed the 1st year BSC – CS.

Today SFC’s College of Information Technology is optimistically taking a bright path. The college has updated its facilities into state of the art industry standards that would meet the demands of the students in the modern world today.

The CIT today is creating ripples in the academic community and drawing raves from the public.

Objectives

It aims:

• To equip students with Christian values, technological knowledge, systematic and technical skills in Research in Systems Analysis, Software Development, Network Administration, Software Application and Allied Areas of Development;
• To provide for continuing professional growth of its faculty and staff;
• To utilize expertise for integral community extension service.

Programs

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

This course which prepares the students for careers as computer systems designers, contractors, providers and service personnel. In addition to developing programming skills in mainstream languages and higher level industry standard programming languages, the core subjects of this course cover the technological side of computer, network systems, Internet communications, information management systems, and software prototyping, and testing systems analysis and design.
